The late star's family has given Lucasfilm permission to use recent footage of the actress to bring Leia into the 2019 film.
Although Carrie Fisher had completed her work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi before her untimely passing, there was the question of just how Lucasfilm would handle the character of General Leia when it came time for Star Wars: Episode IX. After rumours emerged that Lucasfilm would pull a Rogue One and feature a CG Leia, the studio was quick to respond that they had "no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa." Now, at the TCM Film Festival, Fisher’s brother Todd Fisher has revealed that he and Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd have granted Lucasfilm the rights to use unused footage of Fisher from the prior two Star Wars films. Fisher’s brother said in an interview with the New York Daily News:
“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue… To me, Star Wars is the holy grail of storytelling and lore and you can’t mess with it.”
However, there’s yet no word when this footage was shot or how it may have to be altered to fit the story.
Just last month, Disney CEO Bob Iger said The Last Jedi was not being changed in light of Fisher's death. Sources previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Leia was originally to play bigger part in Episode IX than in The Last Jedi, which is directed by Rian Johnson.
Next week at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Mark Hamill is hosting a tribute to Fisher, where the first trailer for The Last Jedi to debut. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters on December 15, 2017 and Star Wars: Episode IX is set for a 2019 release.
